Pessarattu is a crispy crepe made from green gram and rice batter which makes it a protein packed snack. Unlike other crepes, this has a filling of upma and served with coconut chutney. It is also served with ginger chutney. The crepe batter is flavorful with ginger and green chillies. A very healthy and filling option for breakfast.

Ingredients
For the batter:
1 cup green moong (green gram lentil)
1/2 cup rice
3-4 green chillies
Salt as per taste
Water as required

For the upma:
2 tbsp ghee + 3 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dal
1/4 tsp hing
4-5 curry leaves
1 onion, chopped
2 green chillies chopped
1 tsp ginger paste
1/2 lemon juice
1 cup sooji (semolina)
3 cups hot water
Salt as per taste

Method:
For the batter, soak green moong and rice for 3-4 hours. Drain the wate and add the green moong and rice mixture in a blender. Add green chillies, ginger, salt and blend adding water as required. The batter should be of flowing consistency (not very thin) similar to that of dosa batter.
For the upma, heat ghee and oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, hing. Once the urad dal turns pink, add the onions and green chillies. Cook for 2-3 mins and then add the sooji. Roast the sooji on medium flame till the sooji turns pink and gives an aroma. Add 3 cups of hot water, also add ginger and salt. Let it simmer till it becomes thicker. Lastly add lemon juice.
Heat the tawa on medium flame, spread a laddle of batter thinly on the tawa. Cover it with a lid and let it cook for 1-2 mins. Spread some ghee on it. Spread the upma in the centre of the crepe, sprinkle some sugar, fold it and remove from the tawa.
Serve the pessarattu with coconut chutney/ ginger chutney.
