Today I came up with one of the as steamed by folding in a leaf called pupilage or sometimes banana leaves. The aroma of leaves adds extra taste to this dish. But today I’m going to prepare this without the leaves. So let get a start and check out the recipe.
As the first step keep a vessel on the stove and pour water. Let it boil, meanwhile we have to wash the rice thoroughly twice or thrice. Here I have taken 1 cup of basmati rice, usually, at our home, it is prepared using boiled red rice or parboiled rice. I tried using basmati rice it came out good for me. Once the water boiled well switch off the flame add the rice and stir it using a ladle. soak it for 4 to 5 hours.
In a jar, add slices of coconut. Here I have used half portion of 1 whole coconut. You can add more coconut if you want. If we use more coconut these rice balls will become softer as well as tastier. Pulse the coconut for a few minutes.
It’s already 5 hours of soaking of rice completed. Now add the rice to the jar and grind it coarsely. Keep in mind do not grind them to a fine paste. if you do so you won’t get a good texture.
Grind them in batches without adding water. It should be in thick consistency. If it is not so it would be difficult to make balls out of it.
If the batter becomes in loose texture no need to worry, add some rice flour or you can keep this in the refrigerator for an hour or 2.
We have done with grinding now add salt as per your taste. Mix it well
Now we will start making balls. While making the balls roll them gently otherwise it will become harder after steaming. once you are finished, steam the balls for 15 to 20 min in medium flame. The steaming of the balls will depend on the size of the balls, stove settings and quality of the rice.
If you are unsure after 10 to 15 min of steaming, try breaking one of the balls and check if the centre is cooked. If it is still not cooked, steam for a few more min.
Our healthy rice balls are ready to serve. Serve hot with sambar or chutney.
