Similar to the shepherd’s pie, the cottage pie layers up ground beef and veggies, smooth & creamy mashed potatoes, and gravy. Everything gets baked together in the oven, and then an amazingly satisfying casserole pops out! The only thing we think is missing from the traditional cottage pie recipe is cheese, so in our take, we’ve gone ahead and made this comfort food even cozier by adding plenty of mozzarella. For the mashed potatoes:
– 1 lb potatoes, chopped & boiled
– ⅓ cup corn starch
– 4 egg yolks
– ⅓ cup warm milk
– 1 cup shredded mozzarella
– nutmeg
– salt & pepper to taste
– ⅓ cup flour
For the ground beef filling:
– 11 oz ground beef
– ½ onion, diced
– 1 stalk of celery, diced
– 1 carrot, diced
– ¼ cup frozen peas, defrosted
– 3 tbsp tomato paste
– 1 tsp paprika
– 1 tsp chili powder
– 1 tsp cumin
– salt & pepper to taste
– ⅓ cup beef broth
– salt & pepper to taste
– 1½ cups shredded mozzarella for the topping
