Breakfast is often called ‘the most important meal of the day’. Breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period and replenishes your supply of glucose to boost your energy levels and alertness while providing other essential nutrients required for good health.
While growing up, I used to feel so healthy after eating milk and cornflakes (2 spoons of sugar went unnoticed then). I thought that it was the most nutritious breakfast available on the planet.
The Glycemic index measures how much certain foods raise blood sugar levels over a certain period. It is measured between 0 and 100. Cornflakes have one of the highest GI, scoring 93 out of 100.
This score means that it raises the blood sugar level pretty quickly. And if consumed in high amounts, it can lead to an increased risk for diabetes and obesity.
Eating a protein rich breakfast increases the release of satiety hormones, which helps you feel fuller for a longer time, thereby decreasing the urge to eat mid-meal snacks.
It is also one of the main meals and a perfect time to fulfil your protein requirement.
