Ingredients
: 1 1/2 cup toor dal (cooked)
: 2 serving spoons of ghee
:1 inch diameter ball of tamarind soaked in warm water (around 1/4th cup)
: 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
: 2 tsps powdered jaggery
: 1 tsp mustard seeds
: 1/4th tsp hing
: 1/4th tsp turmeric powder
: 3/4th tsp red chili powder
: 3/4th tsp goda masala (or any other garam masala)
: Salt as per taste
: wheat dough to roll chapatis
:10-15 curry leaves
: 1-1 1/2 medium sized onion finely chopped
Steps
:Heat up a kadhai to high flame and add ghee.
:Once the ghee is hot, lower to low to medium flame and add mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves and chopped onions. Let the onions cook until they are golden brown.
: While the onions are cooking, add turmeric powder and saute. Once onions are cooked, add red chili powder and goda masala and saute again.
: Then add dal and water to adjust the consistency of dal.
: Add salt, jaggery and tamarind juice and let the dal cook
: Meanwhile roll out chapatis and with a knife or cutter, cut into diamond shaped pieces. I rolled out two chapatis for this dish.
: Add these chapati pieces into the dal and let it cook for another 4-5 minutes. Add water if needed to adjust the consistency of dal. At first it seems like we haven’t added as many chapati pieces as should have been. But don’t worry. As the dal and chapati cooks, dal becomes thicker and of the perfect consistency.
:Add chopped cilantro and ghee at last to enhance the flavor of dal and turn off the flame.
:Dal dhokli is all ready to be served.
Tips:
: Most of the times, it seems like we haven’t added as many chapati pieces to the dal as should have been. As the dal and chapati in the dal cooks, the gravy becomes thicker and therefore do not add too many chapati pieces.
: Adding ghee to the dal once its ready and just before turning off the flame will enhance the flavor of dal dhokli.
