How do you know if your sourdough starter is alive and healthy?
smell, bubbles, rise, and float
🤍 A healthy, lively starter that has been properly fed has a clean, slightly yeasty scent and a bubbly surface. It should double or triple in size after feeding, and pass the float test, which means a small spoonful of starter floats in a glass of water.
🍞 Don’t worry if your starter has some dark liquid on top, it’s not dead! it’s just hungry and needs to be fed. Just stir it back in or pour it off before feeding.
⚠️ Unless your starter has a pink or orange hue or is beginning to mold, you probably haven’t killed it yet.
