if you love comfort food I’m about to
change your life forever now imagine
your favorite guilty pleasures Pizza mac
and cheese lasagna at half the fat and
half the calories like that idea I send
a top nutritionist to your local market
to find five lowfat Comfort foods and
Heidi Schick is always good at this came
back with products he says that you will
love in fact you will not be able to
tell the difference between these and
your oldtime comfort foods thank you
very much for joining us let’s start
with the oldtime favorite pizza okay so
this is kashi’s mushroom Trio and
spinach the typical one 1/3 of a pizza
is a serving so third of a pizza a third
of a pizza and if you compare that a
typical serving is 16 G of fat this is 9
G of fat
now the great thing about this though is
you still when you bite in you want that
mouth feel that’s what’s driving the
comfort food sensation so there’s still
cheese and that’s important we don’t
want to go no fat necessarily you know
fat helps to satisfy us and taste good
we need it for hormones and lots of
different things so you still get that
mouth feel but then they’ reduced the
fat and the crust because it’s c is that
whole grain crust you get four grams of
fiber and it helps to fill you up so 250
calories as a serving that’s probably
not quite enough for a dinner but you
have room now to add a side salad has
some fruit for dessert nice volume all
right mac and cheese is the next comfort
food you guys are always pushing me for
what’s the best lowfat version of this
okay so this is Annie’s homegrown Deluxe
shells and Wisconsin cheddar it’s a
mouthful that is a mouthful one cup
typical serving 17 gam of fat this is 10
gram of fat very is good now they
say that it is that Wisconsin cheese
that makes you you don’t need to use as
much cheese cuz the cheese of course
that is so part of all of our comfort
Foods dries up that artery clogging
saturated fat and so every time you
reduce cheese you’re going to reduce
some calories reduce some fat the other
thing is is in preparation they don’t
use any butter and they use lowfat
yogurt and skin milk which is something
everyone could try even your food at
home those substitutions where you’re
still getting creamy and salty which is
that sensation again but at a much lower
fat level very shw very clever Devils
all right I love lasagnas and I know
that a lot of folks use them as their
comfort foods but with the cheese and
the extra you know the carbs are in
there it’s sort of shy you know pushes
us away from what we want to do what do
we have as an alternative so this is
Amy’s light and lean spinach Ana and of
course the minute it’s not meat you’re
going to have less fat I really like
this you keep going I’m going to have
the audience so keep this is 250
calories it a typical it’s 2/3 less fat
than in a typical other brand right it
is what do you
think okay so now let’s now how do you
like this for an idea we’re talking
about comfort food for meal time but
really would you have this as a
snack I would eat that anytime
she would eat it anytime I like the this
is important for for most women a snack
is anywhere from 100 to 300 calories
depending on how you distribute your
calories the rest of the day so here it
is 4 in the afternoon when you grab a
candy bar that could be 280 calories
doesn’t last very long it’s not Bridging
the Gap till dinner and there’s no
nutrition this is a comfort food 250
calories pop that in the microwave you
are satisfied you’re not picking out
later in the day it’s very smart and you
like it get up over there all right next
up chicken pop pie I actually don’t know
how you cheat on chicken po pie but they
have managed to do it you have found
something that’s a miracle here take it
away okay so this is Blakes chicken pot
pie one package 33 grams of fat in a
typical serving in Blakes it is now 17 G
of fat but what they do is they don’t
have the crust on the bottom it’s top
only so that mouth feel that first
sensation is that flaky crust and then
they save the fat and again you could do
this at home whether you’re making a
fruit pie just on top or a crumble just
sprinkle it so you get it without having
all of that butter mixed in I think it’s
very smart to look at what manufacturers
are able to do to cheat some of the
calories out and to copy that in our
home it’s another good example we get
the cheese earlier I like it I’m the
final comfort food maybe the best of all
mashed potatoes what’s the lowfast
version here I’m going to ask how some
going to taste it while you’re
describing it so this is orida steamed
Steam and mash cut rusted potatoes what
a concept to actually steam something
right so the the the mashing is where
the the creaminess usually comes in when
it comes to potatoes and what do we
think oh we have a vote here what do you
think we got the thumbs up delicious I
will have it for dinner tonight if you
here you know what it’s all yours you
keep eating down on that thank you right
very good so now here’s the thing right
so there is zero there is zero fat it is
there’s zero fat in
this no fat at all and and I will say
it’s the creaminess the mashing that
really again drives that taste wonderful
finds as always thank you HTI thank you
