welcome to diabetes daily digest my name is Scott I’m a practicing physician assistant working in endocrinology also a type 1 diabetic for over 30 years if you’re interested in diabetes related news Tech talk product reviews please go ahead and subscribe to the channel maybe coming out with new content all the time as a diabetic there’s nothing better than having a snack with a peace of mind knowing that what you’re eating is not going to have an impact on your blood sugar levels so that’s what I’m going to go over today five different snacks that you can consume as a diabetic that will have little to no impact on your blood sugar levels and make sure to stay tuned to the end where I’ll have a few extra tips and tricks to help you manage your diet and glucose levels so let’s get started number five nuts so nuts are a healthy snack that are high in healthy fats protein but low in carbohydrate meaning they will have little impact on your glucose levels as long as they’re eaten in moderation there have even been some studies showing reduction in cardiovascular risk factors in diabetics who consumed nuts a few times a week and then some of the healthiest nuts to consume that are lowest in carbs are pine nuts walnuts pecans and my personal favorite almonds which has tons of nutritional benefits and is super low in carbs and one of the best ways to have this snack is with 100 calorie packs from emeralds which only have two grams of net carbs per pack you can eat these with no insulin or other meds and expect little to no change in your glucose levels number four cheese so cheese is a delicious snack that will have almost zero impact on your blood sugar it’s high in protein calcium and it’s very very low in carbs just have to be careful with your portion size because what it lacks in carbs does make up for in fat that’s why my favorite option is by Baby Belt Baby Belt makes a low-fat variety which only has three grams of fat and zero grams of carbohydrate so whether it’s Babybel or another variety of cheese it’s definitely another great snack and you can rest assured knowing it will have zero impact on your blood sugar levels number three hummus so this is another very healthy snack it’s a great source of plant-based protein and the ingredients in hummus chickpeas olive oil and sesame seeds they’re all loaded with antioxidants which have anti-inflammatory benefits that are super important for diabetics hummus is also a great source of dietary fiber and has a very low glycemic index meaning it won’t cause a sharp spike in your blood sugars and then some great low carb items to dip into your hummus are celery sticks sliced red peppers and cucumber pair these up for a really filling snack that will cause a very minimal spike in your blood sugar number two hard-boiled eggs this is a classic low carb portable snack it’s high in lean protein vitamin D calcium and Iron by itself it’s a very diabetic friendly snack that will have almost no impact on your blood sugar levels and if you throw it in a salad with some spinach kale sliced avocado you’ll have a really low carb healthy meal and then finally number one it’s beef jerky beef jerky is one of those foods that has gotten kind of a bad rap but beef jerky has always been a high protein low carb snack that’s portable shelf stable and won’t spike your blood sugar and over the years healthier lower fat varieties have emerged without the additives and preservatives there’s even some vegan options that are starting to pop up that are all very low in carbs so this is another low carb shelf-stable snack that can be brought with you on the go without having to worry about a spike in your blood sugar levels and then finally a few honorable mentions that didn’t make the top five cut but these are still some really great low-carb snacks that you should consider and then finally a couple tips that I wanted to share with you to help prevent spikes after snacks and meals so the first tip it’s fiber so make sure to add fiber to any meal or snack you possibly can not only is fiber healthy for your heart and maintaining Digestive Health it also slows down digestion which decreases the spike in your glucose levels so go ahead and sprinkle some chia seeds onto your yogurt swap out white rice for brown rice ice and swap out white bread for whole wheat bread little changes like this will help decrease glucose spikes after snacks and meals and then number two get moving after meals and snacks anytime you get up and move after a meal or a snack you start walking bike riding any form of exercise it helps decrease your glucose levels and that’s because exercise not only helps to increase insulin sensitivity which makes the insulin in the body work more efficiently but it also causes the muscles to soak up all of that excess glucose in the body which ultimately decreases your glucose levels I hope that was helpful please let me know in the comments your favorite diabetic friendly snack and thank you so much for watching the video
