today on a holiday loves butter so good but it’s her battle with diabetes she’s talking about did it scare you when you had that diagnosis the third time I’ve had to pull myself up by my bootstraps more than once how she lost 35 pounds little changes can render big results and her healthy twist to Classic Dean dishes so good coming up next on Dr Oz is here she is as busy as ever and as healthy as she has been in years after a diabetes diagnosis she’s taking charge of her health and today she’s going to tell us exactly how she did it Paula Deen come on out and join us [Applause] [Applause] I’ve missed you oh I love having you here they’re excited for you in a very unique way and I’m excited for them these folks are so full of love and we need that we need love in our life well there’s a lot of love with you I gotta say I am absolutely stunned you look so good well thank you and I feel so good and just just to get everyone up to date Paul was diagnosed with diabetes you lost 35 pounds 35 pounds which is a big deal I swear to not hot what did she eat how’d you exercise you know it’s it’s funny Dr Oz uh when I was told I was a type 2 diabetic I didn’t believe the doctor I said she’s got this wrong nobody in my family is diabetic we all live the same way uh so the next six months and when it was time for my checkup she said yep you’re diabetic I said okay went on about my way the next six months she said yes and I’m not real happy with the meds I’ve got you on so I said okay I really am diabetic and at that point I went home to my kitchen and I threw out everything that was white you did white bread white rice white potatoes white pasta and I did that for four months y’all just four months and I lost 35 or 40 pounds and now I’ve brought everything back into my kitchen just like anybody’s kitchen but um the thing that I’m trying to really focus on y’all is moderation moderation moderation you know eat a cookie just don’t eat six of them you know what I mean nobody wants to go their whole life thinking I can never have anything good again between moderation and Hedonism right people fall into the Trap by having the sixth cookie when they started off just having one and that’s part of it because you say oh crap I’ve blown it you know but there’s always tomorrow if you blow it you can start over again tomorrow well you know Paul I spent my whole career sitting with people in an office who have type 2 diabetes who are probably going to need heart surgery because of it and I say cut out the white Foods put your fork down each slower be aware of what you’re doing yes moderation not Hedonism all that stuff and yet most people really suffer with this it’s a big struggle I know it’s much more difficult it’s hard isn’t it y’all it’s hard so what click for you what finally got you over that and you realize you could do it well it was that third visit and uh then I got a call from a pharmaceutical company asking if I would lighten up some of my recipes for them and you know so I mean it was really it just really all came together for me yeah family history heart problems or diabetes Well my my daddy was dead at 40. uh he had rheumatic fever as a child and my mother was dead at 44 y’all just this beautiful couple this most beautiful couple inside and out and uh it was devastating and you know I think I’ve told you before that I went into a 20-year ride with agoraphobia which is awful awful awful yeah so I’ve had to pull myself up by my bootstraps more than once in my 68 years but [Applause] you know it’s um it’s those things that give us an opportunity to shine and to build character you know but it really is the challenging times part of the reason I absolutely adore you and I do for many reasons thank you thank you it’s because you’re so real in these struggles that you face what you get that’s for sure yeah and it’s the truth so Paul was never slowed down by a second on this deal no because I would follow your you know we’d talk and interact and I was so stunned so impressed at how fast you change a lot of things but what I didn’t expect was what a technophile you have become she has a new game app which is fabulous yeah something I think it’s just great she’s been making over some of her classic dishes to be healthier but still just as delicious today she’s going to show us healthier versions of our famous chicken fried steak with Korean gravy of course and tomato pie now you just clear this up why why have you decide to tackle some of these dishes that are so delectable the original one because it’s just like I was saying a while ago we don’t want to get up today and say well I’m going to start doing better I want a diet I want to lose weight and think you can never have that food that you love that your mama cooked for you so and and I do I want to be able to have it and taste it and it’s amazing y’all that little changes can render big results uh like our country fried steak our regular it was made with a quart of whole milk it was made with uh buttermilk it was made with like this much owl and today but who tells us today let me just give up first of all to help you with something is this chicken or is this steak it’s chicken fried steak thank you for clarifying why why is it called chicken fried I gather with steak because I see it here chicken fried steak to me and y’all help me if I’m wrong because I’m I don’t I don’t even confess to know it all but uh I want y’all to see now the new version we’re we’re dipping it through egg whites y’all instead of buttermilk which imagine the calories and the fat that’s just that alone if you don’t mind I’m going to give them the calories and the fat that your normal old-fashioned version had okay that by the way it tastes so good it might be worth it but it’s 889 calories 55 grams of fat which it has to be pretty good that’s Jamie Dean’s favorite thing for me to cook him that’s a Sunday meal it’s a Sunday meal all right so first thing you switch out uh the cream for egg whites egg white right and then we mess it up here you know a little bit in there and then put it in the batter yes and then that’s just regular old flour yes regular old flour any difference there from the norm no sir and before I put it in here I know normally I used to use a third amount of oil the cast iron and a cast iron skillet now the reason I would I used to tell my patients to use cast iron skillets because you get the iron out of that if you’re anemic it actually works really I thought that was being no no it’s true it’s Elemental iron maybe it is all right now you use just that Mr nonstick pan so we’re gonna switch to nonsense non-stick pan y’all uh because you know sometimes you can lose your crust in those so uh into that little bit right there all right now that’s a huge difference and then you should mentioned you switch out the couple the quart of whole milk we’re only going to use a fourth of a cup of milk for this cream gravy y’all but we’re gonna use a low sodium chicken broth so it really is like creamy oh Paul is it good well give me some oh it’s so good this this newly made chicken fried steak yes has with the creamy gravy by the way and add it on top it has 339 calories 17 grams of fat that’s half the calories a third the fat and it is really good the audience the audience is going to rust the states here that thing looks so darn good it is delicious and just to prove it open up girl feed it to her oh she’s throwing you under the bus did you enjoy it was it good you know what I promise that the commercial we’re going to cut that up and share it in that yummy darling in that yummy more than yummy thank you very much according to somebody else it is more than I’m gonna so let’s move on to that famous tomato pie you make this is a big change because I gotta say Tomatoes themselves are perfect but uh although it’s delicious and it’s one of your favorites I understand is that right it is it is this is a dish y’all that we serve uh if we’re having company and having a char grill steak we’ll serve a slice of tomato pie along with it but we also love it for breakfast with scrambled eggs now at lunch it’s wonderful with a small salad the problem is the way that it was originally made you can’t afford anything next to it because it’s 437 calories and 37 grams of fat so since I trust you and I love you and your middle name is butter or your second word in the episode tell me how you made this taste like that okay well this is a regular pie crust I have used a lighter recipe for this new crust this flaky crust this much cheese is in this pie y’all this much cheese is in the new version so the Euro becomes the Tomato not the cheese the cheese and the mayonnaise is the hero in that one we had all this Mayo in here yes sir [Laughter] yes you are something else but look at here look at here now we’re going to use this much cheese that much mayonnaise and the the tomato is a true star in this one now what is the difference I’m going to taste but please give that same young lady over there taste better compare this as well okay go ahead I want to get honest answers over there okay here I come Paul I want to get you some crust of course she wants the crust while she’s doing that we’re going to forget 207 calories 14 grams of fatness newer version but we’re the I won’t drink you this time that was good Paul mean but good [Applause] what a devil you are if you like it is it good and I gotta say with this version of your tomato pie you can have lots of sides with it because there’s room and I don’t I personally I tasted both of them listen this is really rich and you know how fantastic it is but this stuff is so good that will become my staple in fact wonderful and send Dr Oz uh y’all y’all put this little thing in your hat and remember it because it’ll work with chicken as well a pork fried steak using the egg whites right using the egg whites because it’s like that buttermilk it’ll work to hold on that little bit of flour so like I said just stick that one in your little memory bank and you know use it on anything I adore having you on let me celebrate let me celebrate Paula Deen when people have done what you’ve done and gone through so much and bounced back and keep the energy in their eyes the same as you said the audience have I seen you all the time I loosen your hold over others and get rid of the stress in your life next [Music] how many of you have uttered this sentence if I don’t do it myself it won’t get done right I know I have after all I’m a surgeon but lots of other yacht there so I’ve got a plan for all my fellow control freaks today because controlling everything and everyone around you can cause you to lose control of your own health that’s what’s happening to Rosemary I admit I’m a control freak I need things to be the right way and I think my way is the right way it works out all the time if you do it my way I have an internal clock in my head that tells me how much every activity is going to take I can show what time my family wakes up in the morning come on baby you got 30 minutes brush your teeth make your bed get up you got 20 minutes I never allow my husband to do the laundry because I would have this huge fear of him not doing it the right way he’s just too much detergent I’m the one who does the food shopping because if my husband does it I find that he might buy something we don’t need or we might end up going over budget we’re the throats and you got crackers we already have crackers babe I control the finances I have an alarm set for when each bill is due so that we are never late and we never pay interest on anything when it comes to scheduling I’m the master this is command Central this computer I have my work schedule and in green I have an overview of what’s going on at home this manages my husband’s schedule my three daughter schedule and each is color coded on my tablet I have an overview of the home schedule an overview of the work schedule on my phone I have everyone’s schedules to a t this way I make sure that everyone is where they need to be at all times to the minute I fear follow our schedule to get out of control we won’t spend time together as a family I feel like my need to control is wreaking havoc on my health because I put everyone else’s need before my own I am stressed completely exhausted and I feel run down it’s Gotta stop I’m at my Breaking Point Rosary is joining us controlling everything even how much detergent is in the wash cycle I mean it’s unbelievable what would happen if your husband or someone else helped you do the laundry I fear that they might mess it up Dr Oz we don’t have time to really or money to really just they might destroy our clothes they might put too much detergent use too many dryer sheets it it might drive me crazy and then we end up going shopping for more clothes which put us again out of budget it just has to be done my way most families would never offer and most moms would happily take the offer if it did occur it’s remarkable it’s the opposite of what I normally would expect and it’s interesting you’re worrying yourself about what might happen but that in itself is paralyzing you what would it mean to you if you could relearn this control issue and deal with some of the stress that comes from it that will mean so much to me however right way which is my way I’m glad I got that you’ve been trying to control the interview so I actually brought a colleague to join me today someone who I trust a lot it’s going to help you everyone at home as well to help loosen your control over others so you can gain control over your own health which is my goal please welcome psychologist Dr Aaron olivo [Applause] so Aaron is an interesting First Step that I want you to think through she actually argues this is for everybody by the way that we have to be a witness to our own behavior if you don’t mind explain what that means to Rosemary and everybody else sure I really do believe that we can Behavior if we don’t know that we’re engaging in it right you have to know what’s happening and we have to be able to observe ourselves almost be a witness to our own behavior that’s hard though sometimes right it really is and the good news is that you’re here because you recognize that you’re you’re over controlling things and it’s creating a problem for you but the other I think really good news about being here today is that you have a family that is absolutely interested in being a part of this solution as well and they want to help you too and so they actually tape some interviews where they are going to show you and tell you a little bit about the behavior they observe that you’re engaging in okay are you ready to see your truth yes I’m sure it’s great well we’ll see we’re about to find out take a look I think my wives need to control actually comes from a good place her idea is that if she would actually control and manage that time I would have more time to spend together in the end as a family but to be quite honest with you at the end of the day there really is no time left over she has a time limit for everything if I don’t get that thing done in that time frame or if I don’t do it how she wants me to do it Then I then I feel nervous that she might yell or scream because it’s not her way and how she wants me to do it she will make time for fun activity but the fun activity is timed it’s such a kill Joy she said everybody has a rules of playing in the house and like she’s playing every role in the house and it just gets really frustrating we really love her and appreciate all that she does but personally I wish sometimes she would just relax you know stop and take some time for herself that’s a lot of love there so what does it feel like to hear yourself described that way to be honest I actually thought that I was doing something great I didn’t really realize how it was making them feel because in the long run I really wanted to spend more time with them and make sure that they are happy so it’s really a surprise to hear them say that you know they’re frustrated or they might get a little nervous if they’re not done in that time frame yeah so obviously they’re stressed out by it but it’s probably stressing you out as well yes absolutely it is you know when I fight with my wife this is one of the things we fight about because I’m always micromanaging she calls me she she nicknamed me a superhero the meddler it’s my nickname the meddler and she and she’s right when she says that sometimes I try to be so efficient that I’m inefficient and I think you’re causing a lot of heat with that family that you love so much who are sitting on the bench watching you play all the positions on the field and the real experience you want to have in life is on the field not on the bench so Dr Evo says for all of our behaviors all of them you can find something that’s correlated to one of eight core emotions they stem from those emotions we’re gonna find out what they are and how you can control them so you can get rid of your stress for good stay here all right next stressed out and run down from doing everything for everyone else get to the root of your control issues and stop your emotions from controlling you understand your behavior included who are stressed out and run down doing things for everybody else everything friendly for everybody else we have the plan to stop controlling others so you can control your health Dr Lebo says the stress that all control freaks feel always boils down to emotions to emotions so if you can’t explain the big idea for us so I think the big idea here really is that we’re using this term stress catch-all phrase I’m so stressed out I’m so overwhelmed and we’re not really being specific enough to really be able to come up with a solution because stress when we say we’re feeling so stressed out what we’re really feeling is that we’re struggling with some difficult distressing emotion so the the great news is that despite the fact that we have millions of words for emotions there’s really only eight emotions there’s really only eight core emotion families that we need to learn about and so that makes it easier so we have this great graphic to show what those eight emotions are and I’d love to use rosemary use you as an example to go through the fact that you’re probably experiencing a bunch of different emotions when it comes to your controlling behavior and that’s true for most people who are controlling things that you know you’re starting out by saying I feel so stressed because of my controlling Behavior but I’d actually suggest that it’s actually emotion that’s driving you to control so so let’s look at the at the different emotions to start with my guess is if I asked you what do you think drives your need to control things and you’d probably point to that first emotion love right you love your kids you love your husbands you love your family yes absolutely and that’s really why you mostly try to control things you think right yeah I want to maximize time with them because I love them so much I want to make sure I have a lot of time with them so I time the activities that they do so that we have the time that to spend time like we really want to spend right right and so love drives that right yes but here’s the one I think is the most important and this is the one Dr Oz that I also think is most often driving Control Freaks and that’s fear fear so when I ask you to complete the sentence if I don’t keep control over everything I really fear things will spiral out of control I won’t see my family as much as I need to and want to and what would that mean that would mean to me that I don’t have it together I would feel sad I would be upset that I’m not spending the time with the people who love me and who I love and would you say that that actually means you wouldn’t be being a good mom yes absolutely I don’t I wouldn’t be the best mom out there I think parents should spend time with their kids and wives should spend time with their husband if I’m unable to do so I would feel that I’m not not only not being a good mom but also not being a good wife right right it’s a powerful statement because basically what I’m hearing you say is that if I’m not in control I’m not a good mom I took out all the connecting facts but that’s the beginning and the end of what you just told us yes Aaron give us some some examples of how people a lot of people I think are doing this when they try to control an area that they have some control over they actually give up the places where they really wanted to control so first other exam going the way you want it to go that a relationship you’re in is ending or not going the way you want it to and those things are not as controllable and so we find other places in our life to be able to control so I need everything in my cupboard to be in alphabetical order or I need all the timing to be exactly perfect I need the right laundry detergent and those are little things that we feel we can control so that it helps us with that out of control feeling we haven’t enough when was the last time you felt that you did something that was out of control um I would say in college I had my daughter my first daughter my oldest daughter so right there I since then I decided that I need to be in control of not only me but now another person so I have to shape up it wasn’t the plan to have the child in college absolutely not it wasn’t and although she is a blessing and she’s great this I took that as a like during the headlights like a warning like I have to get in control now Dr Libo I this is by the way thank you for being honest about this I know these are tough conversations but this is how we get the solutions for you and so many folks at home these are the kinds of insights that we need to move on you know insights that sometimes you try to cover up a little bit one last tip’s a big one Dr levo argues that we have to do one thing every day that makes us uncomfortable why do we have to be comfortable being uncomfortable because I actually think that you’re controlling is making you more uncomfortable you need to practice not controlling so that you see that it can actually feel better but then things will spiral out of control they probably won’t and what and here’s the thing small spirals itty bitty spirals you have to start you do have to start small so that’s why I suggest you pick one thing so pick one thing you’re willing to give up the shallow five more minutes in the shower okay all right okay then I want you this is five more minutes for you in the show for the kids oh the kids are limited yes you’ll limit how long they’re in the shower absolutely I love this I feel much better about myself now ah I’m taking this home so when you resist the urge to rush them along through their shower you’re probably going to feel a little uncomfortable at first because that fear that’s driving things it’s going to come up while you don’t go in and tell them come on hurry up what I’d like you to do instead is to sit breathe relax your body and remind yourself that whether they take a five minute longer shower doesn’t make you a bad mom right this isn’t actually about that Rosemary I think life happens while we’re busy making plans yeah and you’re making so many plans that that wonderful snapshot of life that I’m looking at with the family on the bench over there uh when they’re when they’re even a year older you’ll never have those moments again I’d rather they struggle with the extra five minutes in the shower and then build yourself up to the laundry machine stuff you’ll probably enjoy that then it’s called training your kids all right I want everyone at home everyone in the audience I want you all to do this make some to pick anything it makes you a little uncomfortable takes you out of your safety zone because those safety walls you’re putting up that actually cages that you’re putting around yourself that don’t let you move and become the person you could be challenge yourself challenge your emotions and practice letting go I’m gonna give you the full plan and all the information we talked about plus
