Whole Black Gram Porridge – one of the healthy wholesome breakfast and staple recipe in my native. Urad dal is rich in calcium, iron and folic acid which is especially important for girl child and women. Urad dal is also good for heart.

Ulundhu Kanji / Black Gram Porridge is one of the healthiest porridges. It is also called as Urad Dal Porridge. It is a very good breakfast option. Black gram is rich in protein and many other nutrients.

Urad dal porridge or ulundu kanji is very delicious, easy to prepare and keeps you full for a longer time, hence helps in weight loss also. Black gram is very nutritious as it contains high levels of protein, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and vitamin B. As it is a rich source of iron, it is especially good for women’s health. A food without oil and cooked soft is always good for sick people. Black gram is known as Ulundu in Tamil and as Urad dal in Hindi.Black uradh dhal or Black gram is a very healthy pulse. This porridge can be made using split/whole black uradh dhal.

It has anti-inflammatory properties. People struggling with back pain, joint pain can include urad dal in their diet as it helps decrease inflammation and pain. Being rich in various minerals like phosphorous, potassium, iron and magnesium, it is good for bone health and also helps in maintaining bone mineral density.

— Add more water to get a porridge consistency.
— Moongdal can also be added.
— Those who don’t like garlic replace it with a pinch of asafetida.
— Soaking the black gram helps it to cook faster ( If not soaked, it takes around 15 to 20 whistles in a pressure cooker to cook).
— Grated coconut can be also added at the end for the extra flavour.
