I’m Nick Hamman and this video is paying tribute to 3 South Africa fast food classics and if you know, you know and if you don’t know, its time to learn. I’m out at Akhalwayas on the M1 and we’re kicking it off with Joburg’s answer to the Gatsby, The AK. We’re talking a fresh footlong roll of white bread, spread open begging for a good filling. First, not one but two cups of cheddar cheese, then to keep things healthy we’ve got lettuce, red onion and tomato. Sauce, and lots of it, at least 3 different kinds. Next comes the meat, I’m doing half masala steak and half spiced chicken. Deep fried polony and Russian slices for good measure, then chips spiced with masala and salt all tucked neatly into classic paper waiting to be served.
Now for the famous wonder why pizza. Take a large base, lay down the sauce, the spiced meat and the first squirting of sauce, then more meat and more sauce… lots more. Now its time for a full coating of masala spiced chips and of course lots of polony and Russians. Then for a touch of freshness it’s time for green peppers and red onions and of course cheese and lots of it!
Then you’ve got the iconic Wits Special. A toasted sandwich that begins here with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and you guessed it, masala steak, sliced meats, tons of sauce and spiced masala chips
These 3 meals are giants of the South African fast food industry, particularly within the coloured, Indian and Muslim communities of Gauteng and surrounds and if you’ve ever indulged in this messy deliciousness it’s time to give these classics their flowers in the comments and I’ve you’d like to try any of these out for yourself its time to look in the captions for the details of where you can find Akhalwayas on the M1 for yourself
