Hi, this is Aviva Goldfarb from the Six O’Clock Scramble, and I want to talk to you about making your own salad dressing.

You can make any dressing you want. There’s no reason to buy bottled salad dressing. It often has too much sugar, too much sodium, and it’s so easy and delicious to make your own. So the basics are all you need: some oil, maybe olive oil, some vinegar, maybe balsamic vinegar if you want to make a balsamic vinaigrette. Usually about a two-to-one ratio oil-to-vinegar. And then you can add things like fresh herbs; you can add grainy mustard, if you like that; you can finely mince a shallot, which gives it a lot of flavor; add a little honey if you want it sweeter. That’s all it takes—you shake it up in a jar, you can make two to three times as much as you need and re-use it over the course of a few weeks.

So, I’m going to show you a dressing that you can use on a salad, or you can use it as a dip. Kids love this dressing. My daughter loves ranch dressing. So I’m going to show you how easy it is to make your own healthy ranch dressing.

So I have here already two tablespoons of sour cream. And of course, you can double or triple this recipe if you want to. And then we are going to add two tablespoons of mayonnaise. That gives it the—[dogs barking]—just ignore that. That gives it the creaminess. And then, we are going to add two tablespoons of buttermilk. And you can use the extra buttermilk in a lot of ways, including you might as well make some buttermilk biscuits. I have a whole wheat buttermilk biscuit recipe on my site. And then about a teaspoon of white wine vinegar and about a quarter teaspoon of dried dill. You can also use fresh dill—probably three times as much if you’re using fresh. And a quarter teaspoon of garlic powder. You can use fresh garlic, too, but we like the flavor this gives it, actually. It’s just dried—dehydrated—garlic, there’s nothing else in it. And then about an eighth of a teaspoon of black pepper. And then about an eighth of a teaspoon of salt. And I think that’s everything you need. And then you can just whisk it together with a fork or shake it together in a jar, and you have this delicious, creamy, homemade ranch dressing that you and the kids are going to love.

So my neighbors are here and maybe they’re going to try homemade ranch dressing. Hey guys, come on in! Do you guys want to try some homemade ranch dressing that I just made [Yeah, nods from the neighbors]. Oh you’re going to climb up there all by yourself, Harper? So nice to see you guys, Reese and Avery. Do you guys want to try it? See what you think. Nice dipping.

Mm, it’s good. Yum. Oh, you like it [Yeah, nods from the neighbors]? So I guess it gets the kids’ seal of approval!

Remember, you are never too busy to eat well or to make your own salad dressing.
