Smart Choices, the Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy for Queensland Schools is a Queensland Government initiative to improve the nutritional value of food and drinks supplied to students in Queensland schools.
Paul and Blair are two high school teachers who have a passion for cooking healthy food. They are going to demonstrate how to cook chicken two ways – a poached version served with a tabbouleh salad and yoghurt dressing and a marinated grilled version served with tabbouleh in a wrap. These chicken recipes are a great healthy BBQ alternative to the sausage sizzle. We know that sausage sizzles are a popular way to fundraise in schools but usually sausages are very high in fat and sodium making them a RED food under the Smart Choices strategy.
Remember, food safety must always be a priority when food is supplied in your school community. The Queensland Department of Health has a variety of fact sheets with detailed information on food safety. Topics include cross contamination, food borne illness and egg safety for food businesses. These can be accessed at www.health.qld.gov.au/foodsafety.
