Makhana Samak Sheera
Maha Shivratri special prasad — satvik, nutritious, delicious, and prepared with love and devotion.
Ingredients
• 1 cup roasted makhana (fox nuts)
• 15–20 almonds (roasted and powdered)
• 1 tbsp ghee
• 4 tbsp samak rice (washed)
• ½ cup water
• ½ cup roasted sweet potato (mashed or chopped)
• 4–5 tbsp jaggery (about ½ cup, adjust to taste)
• ½ cup milk
• 4–5 cardamom pods (powdered)
• Few saffron strands
• Chopped pistachios (or nuts of choice)
• Extra ghee if required
Method
1. Dry roast makhana and keep aside. Grind into a coarse powder.
2. Roast almonds, let them cool, and grind into a fine powder.
3. Heat ghee in a pan. Add washed samak rice and sauté for a minute.
4. Add ½ cup water, cover, and cook until the rice softens.
5. Add roasted sweet potato and mix well.
6. Stir in makhana powder, almond powder, jaggery, and milk. Cook on low heat, stirring continuously.
7. Add cardamom powder and saffron strands. Mix well.
8. If the mixture becomes too thick, add a little ghee or milk.
9. Garnish with chopped pistachios and serve warm (traditionally served on a banana leaf).
