Amlas (known as ‘usirikaya’ in telugu and ‘nellikai’ in tamil and kannada) are well known for their health benefits and are supposed to be immune boosters, is rich in vitamin C and is very essential to include it in our diet frequently. Usirikaya/Gooseberry Pulihora is one of the easy rice varieties, tastes delicious too. It is a good lunch box option too.
Here is an easy recipe of rice made with Amlas in Andhra style.
Ingredients for Gooseberry Rice/Amla Pulihora:
Amla/Gooseberries – 7 nos
Basmati rice/Normal rice – 2 cups (cooked)
Oil – 3 tsps
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Chana dal – 2 tsps
Urad dal – 2 tspa
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Peanuts – 3 tsps
Turmeric – 1 tsp
Asafetida – ½ tsp
Green chillies – 3 slitted
Dry red chillies – 4 (break into half)
Curry leaves – few
Salt – as per taste
Lemon – half (optional)
