Vallarai Thogayal / Brahmi Leaves

Whenever I hear the name of this Keerai, I think of my mom. During our childhood, she kept saying Vallarai Keerai saapdu. Nyabagasakthi will improve. Meaning eating Vallarai keerai improves memory power. Surprisingly enough, it has more health benefits than just improving brain function.

It has vitamin C that will Boost the immune system, helps in maintaining good heart health, and Relaxes muscle cramps. Since it is rich in dietary fibre it also helps in Treating constipation.

It is a wonder herb that is used widely in Traditional medicine like Ayurveda and Siddha. Fun Fact – It resembles the shape of the brain.

You can make Vallarai keerai kootu with Paruppu, Vallarai keerai soup, Vallarai keerai Tea, Chutney or Thogayal.

I have made a finger-licking thogayal with Vallarai inspired by many recipes online. I also learned that adding Tamarind along with Vallarai Keerai nullifies its benefits. I am not sure about but I skipped it because I spotted this on multiple pages.

So here is my version of Vallarai Thogayal..

Ingredients needed

Vallarai Keerai / Brahmi Leaves – 1 bunch (30-35gms)
Urad dal – 3 Tbsp (45 gms)
Red chilli – 7-8 Nos
Small Onions – 18-20 Nos
Garlic – 4 Nos
Tomato – 1 Medium Sized
Coconut – 3 Tbsp (45 gms)
Sesame oil – 1 Tbsp
Salt – As needed
Coriander – 1 handful
