Here’s why parrots need a diet of a high quality pellet and chop, instead of seed, which can be very fatty and cause birds to be hormonal.
If you have any questions, you can ask in the comments! 🙂
First of all, as mentioned above, seed can be very bad for parrots as it has very low nutritional value and can be very harmful to a parrot’s long term health, and can lead to things like fatty liver disease.
Chop is a blend of vegetables and sometimes legumes or grains that provides most of the vitamins and minerals a parrot needs in order to be healthy and thrive. Pellets are fed in order to fill in the nutritious gap which chop cannot provide. Seed and fruit should only be fed as treats, as they can make your bird hormonal.
High quality pellet examples include TOPs, Harrison’s, and Roudybush.
A great way to convert parrots from seed to pellets is slowly adding more and more pellets to their seed over the course of a few months, until they are fully converted. Make sure to watch your bird’s weight and poop to make sure they are eating. (Dark green/blackish poop means they aren’t eating)
If your birds are picky, another way to do this is to make the pellets wet so they are soft, and can stick to seed. This will ensure that when the bird tries to pick out seeds, they will still be forced to taste some of the pellet and gradually get used to it.
Lastly, you can also search up birdie bread recipes online which combine seed, chop, and veggies into edible bread for birds!
To convert a bird to chop, try musing in seeds or pellets if they already eat them, or try making the birdie bread mentioned above.
(Also, make sure you never feed your bird many fruit pits or seeds, mushroom, onion, garlic, or avocado)
