More than what your body can handle. If the blood sugar reading is 100 or even 200 mg/dl,  it can be tackled by the body. Beyond this, it begins to get problematic. But keep in mind that Â
High blood sugar is just the symptom of diabetes and not the root cause of it. Take an example of  a person who is suffering from fever because of a viral infection. Now, if that person only tries Â
To suppress the fever, it won’t help him in the long run because the infection is still there.  Similarly, if we only take metformin and drugs like that to suppress the blood sugar, it won’t  help the root cause which is Insulin resistance. Basically, when you eat food, your body converts Â
It into glucose. However, to use this glucose for energy, the glucose molecule must enter  the cells. And that’s where Insulin, a hormone produced by pancreas comes into picture. Just  as to open a door, you need a key. Insulin is the key for the glucose to enter the cell doors where Â
It is used to produce energy. This is a normal scenario. But when you begin to eat excessive  amount of carbohydrates, glucose in the blood rises beyond the limit. Pancreas, in response,  produces more insulin to push that glucose into the cells. However, after a point, the cells can’t Â
Take in more glucose and they begin to resist insulin’s signal to absorb glucose. Consider a  coach of delhi metro which is already full of people. Now, if someone tries to push in more  people into it. What will happen? People inside will begin to resist this. This is exactly what Â
We call Insulin resistance. Cells are already so full of glucose and they can’t take in more  glucose. So right now the blood will have an excess amount of unutilised glucose and pancreas  will try to pump in more insulin to somehow push that glucose into the cells. This high insulin Â
Causes more insulin resistance. And when cells get too resistant to insulin, its called diabetes.  This makes sense why insulin resistance causes increase in body fat. In fact, blood thickens  up with excess glucose which injures tiny blood vessels. This is a major reason why diabetes, Â
If not reversed causes kidney failure, heart strokes, blurred vision, foot amputation and nerve  damage. So how can we reverse this mess? Only if we use up this excess blood sugar in the cells and  make the body sensitive to insulin, the situation will automatically reverse. And it’s possible, Â
Only if you are really keen on taking the 3 steps. STEP 1 – DIET First of all, let’s get this straight that diabetes is not a disease, it is in fact a  dietary disorder. Its caused by wrong diet and it can be reversed by eating right. Its Â
Not just an Ayurvedic claim but there is modern research to support this fact. Now,  if you say that diabetes runs in my family. Then I think you should be happy to know that genes  contribute less than 15% chances. Plus, studies show that its the wrong food choices that trigger Â
Such genes. So how should your diet look like if you are truly looking to reverse diabetes? For breakfast, its best that you eat fruits. Yes, you need not avoid fruits in diabetes.  Fruit sugar is natural plus its fructose which gets metabolised in the liver easily. Also, Â
Fruits are high on antioxidant scale that help reverse diabetes. Choose any one seasonal fruit.  Preferably citric like Jamun, Guava, Orange, Mosambi and Pineapple or any other fruit you  like. Banana, Mango, Cheeku, dates and watermelon should be taken in moderation. Just make sure Â
That you avoid fruit juice as it is devoid of fibre and spikes blood sugar. If fruit alone  isn’t enough for you can also eat vegetable dalia after that. Use a variety of seasonal  vegetables. Rather than wheat, prefer using Barley, Oats and millets to make this dalia.Â
Suffering from diabetes, its extremely beneficial that you start your lunch with a big bowl of raw  vegetable salad. What it does is that, first, the fibre and antioxidants in the salad won’t let  the blood sugar spike too high. And second, you will get full fast. If you don’t like raw salad, Â
You can lightly saute or steam the vegetables. Cucumber, cabbage, onions, carrots can be  included. Then you can have protein rich dal with some seasonal sabzi and chapati. Kulthi dal is  almost medicinal in diabetes. Rajma, chhole, chana dal, green moong and matki are all great options. Â
For diabetics, its ideal if they avoid wheat and white rice. Millets are super grain with low  glycemic load and high fibre. IIn fact, they look like small rice. They can be consumed just like  rice in the form of khichadi, pulao or biryani. Millet flours are easily available and so can Â
Make chapatis out of it. If you can’t do without wheat and rice, Khapli wheat is one variety which  is suitable for diabetics. Similarly, handpounded rice can be consumed in moderation. Basically,  when you eat your meal, you should eat less of grain and more of that sabzi. It is important that Â
You strictly avoid refined oils for cooking. They are proven to damage the pancreas. Its high time  you start using Kachhi ghani cold pressed oils. Then in the evening, if you feel like snacking,  prefer eating low carb high fat foods. Why I suggest this will be more clear if you look at Â
This graph. Compare huge difference in the blood sugar spike caused by carbs versus that of fats.  Try a handful of peanuts. Rich in healthy fatty acids and protein, it hardly spikes blood sugar  and rather makes you feel full easily. Other such options can be pumpkin seeds, almonds and Â
Cashews. Simply a serving of fruit can also be taken. Apple with peanut butter applied on them  can be a good option. You can even have Tulsi, ginger cinnamon herbal tea at anytime of the day. Then for dinner, again start with salad but this time take onion salad. You will be amazed to know Â
How raw onion has a special compound that reduces the blood sugar within hours. There have been  several studies done. In one study, just 100 grams of raw onion reduced blood sugar in 84 diabetic  people in 4 hours. Then you can have khichdi, dal with millets or sabzi with millets. Avoid sabzis Â
Having aloo, brinjal, sweet corn and soybean. Try to complete your dinner by 7 PM. What this  will do is that the diet which is essentially low carb will reduce the blood sugar and the fasting  window of 12 to 16 hours will help instigate the repair mechanism of the body. Body’s intelligence Â
Will have ample opportunity to bring the insulin resistance thing in order . How well intermittent  fasting works in diabetes is clear from this study done on 2 groups. People who were following  intermittent fasting for 3 months , their diabetes improved 47% while in the normal group there was Â
Just 2% improvement. Basically, intermittent fasting will speed up your recovery 23 times. Needless to say, you should strictly avoid refined sugar, packaged foods, carbonated  drinks and maida based junk food. If you can’t do this much then I don’t think you are serious about Â
Reversing diabetes. Even milk and milk products are better avoided for the first few months. For diabetics, its best that they consume sugar only from fruits. However, if you feel the need  to add sugar, note this. Artificial sweeteners like sugar free are the worst because they aren’t Â
Metabolised well and have proven side effects. Then comes refined sugar which is again chemically  processed. Better are jaggery, jaggery powder, dry dates powder and honey. According to Ayurveda,  pure raw neem and jamun honey are considered among the best sweeteners in diabetes. STEP 2 – HERBS As we have discussed, the right diet is Â
The primary medicine in reversing diabetes. And to accelerate the process, Ayurvedic scriptures  talk about various herbs and combinations. Taking into consideration two factors: Effectiveness and  Practicality, I have selected two. One to be taken in the morning and the other before going to sleep Â
At night. Morning one is methi dana. Ayurveda is clear that methika, its sanskrit name is a  medicine in madhumeh i.e. diabetes. Today modern studies are in line as well which show that  methi dana or fenugreek seeds have this peculiar property to reduce the blood sugar level and also Â
Increase insulin sensitivity. At night, soak 1 tablespoon of methi dana in little water. The next  morning, first drink plain water, go freshen up and then have methi water and also chew the methi  seeds. Second one is a combination of two herbs referred to as Nisha Amalaki yog in Ayurveda. Â
Basically, its turmeric plus amla. All you need to do is take 1 teaspoon of amla powder, mix 1/4th  tsp of turmeric and add it in hot water. Now this little shot is a potent medicine for diabetes. Â
This classical formula comes in the form of tablet as well which you can have with warm water. STEP 3 – WALKING Walking in diabetes  is a double edged sword. First, obviously because its a form of exercise. And whenever we exercise, Â
The excess sugar in the blood is used up by the body. So walking for just 15 mins after a  meal is your natural metformin tablet. Although walking has another advantage. Its that it is  a stress buster. And stress, mind you is one of the major triggers of diabetes. When our mind is Â
Under stress, body releases the stored glucose into the blood thereby increasing blood sugar  even more. Try walking whenever you get time, after dinner or early in the morning you will  feel better instantly. Research has shown that if one walks 3 kms daily, blood sugar levels go down Â
While insulin sensitivity increases significantly. If we quickly recap, Diabetes is not a disease but  a lifestyle disorder. If however ignored and managed it is a precursor for many  life threatening diseases. Its root cause is insulin resistance. And to get hold of the root, Â
You need to take 3 steps. Diet that should be low in carbs, relatively high in protein and  healthy fats. Fruits should be consumed before breakfast, vegetable salad before lunch and  onion salad before dinner. Try to eat within a window of 12 hours and keep at least 12 hours Â
For fasting. To speeden up the process, have methi water with seeds in morning. And amla  turmeric water at night. Walking is not just a simple and effective exercise to burn up the  excess glucose in the blood but it is a great stressbuster which taps diabetes from its root.Â
So if you follow the three steps i.e. Diet, herbs and walking, within a week you  will experience a noticeable drop in your base sugar level. If you are already on medication,  its best to taper it down slowly week by week. If you diligently stick to this plan, Â
In a few months, a time will come when your doctor will tell you that now you don’t need any  medicine. That you don’t have diabetes anymore. I want you take this up as a challenge and then Â
