I live for the first blustery day of fall. As soon as the temperatures dip, I’m ready to slip into soft sweaters, sip steaming mugs of cider, and gather with family and friends around my dining table. Hosting parties during the fall is intimate, laid-back, and oh-so-cozy. If you’re looking for a sign to dust off your hosting gloves, let this list of 16 fall party ideas be it.
The idea that hosting has to be expensive and complicated is actually a myth. After making it a point to invite my friends over more often this year, I’ve learned that the best gatherings are casual. This fall is your chance to throw a few simple and heartfelt gatherings that will make the season feel extra special. Find 16 easy fall party ideas for a cozy night in with friends below.
At-home café
If you’re not familiar with the at-home café trend that has been circulating around TikTok all year, let me introduce you to one of the coziest party ideas to host this fall. Homemade pumpkin spice lattes and cinnamon rolls with your friends at home? Yes, please!
The beauty of this gathering is that it can be as casual or as fancy as you like. If you want to be extra, print out a menu, set out paper coffee cups with personalized labels, and make some classic bakery treats from scratch. If baking is not your thing, grab some pastries from the grocery store and put them under a cake dome. Any treats nestled under a dome look fancy! You’ll also need a few different syrups and mix-ins for coffee so everyone can personalize their own beverage. I hosted my own at-home café earlier this year and offered two different syrups for lattes, and it was perfect! No need to make the menu huge—the simpler the better.
Cookbook club
The idea of a cookbook club is similar to a traditional book club, but instead of discussing the latest release, you’re flexing your chef muscles. Here’s how it works: Each guest makes one recipe from the chosen cookbook. The host is in charge of the entrée, while the guests split up the drinks, appetizers, and dessert.
If you have more people you’d like to invite, break the entrée up into the main and sides, or add apps and sweets. This way, the cost doesn’t all fall on the host, and everyone gets to take a crack at cooking something new. Choose autumnal dishes like slow-braised meats, cozy soups, and fruit crisps. And finally, use pretty place settings and personalized name cards to feel extra fancy.
Witchy vision board night
Fall always brings a “back to school” energy, and I’m a sucker for a good project. With the calendar year winding down, now is the time to manifest what I want the last months of the year to look like. What better way to do that than by making a fall 2026 vision board? Better yet, why not bring some witchy energy into the manifesting mix?
Invite your friends to cast a spell on their own lives by creating a vision board of their hopes and dreams. Here’s what you’ll need: posterboard, glue sticks, scissors, magazines, photos, markers, and motivational quotes in mind. Light some candles, channel your witchy energy, and get deep with your friends about what you really want out of life.
Soup soirée
There’s truly nothing more comforting on a chilly night than soup. Once the temperatures start to dip, invite friends over for a cozy evening with soup as the main course. You can opt to prepare the soup yourself or go potluck-style and have everyone bring a batch. Make your soup well in advance so it has time to simmer and get as flavorful as possible (your house will smell amazing!), then keep everything warm on the stovetop or in a slow cooker. Set out some toppings like crackers or grated cheese, then pop a loaf of bread in the oven to get it warm and crusty right before guests arrive. The dress code for an evening like this has to be comfy and cozy—tell your guests to come in loungewear or PJs!
Bookmarks with the boos
Just like how you can never read too many books, you can never have too many bookmarks. Especially if you’re like me and you’re always losing them in car cracks and airplane seat backs. Welcome fall reading season (think: fuzzy blankets, cozy candles, and nailbiting thrillers) with a brand new bookmark that oozes autumn energy. Gather the biggest book lovers you know and make your dream bookmarks using acrylic backgrounds, fall patterns, and orange beads. This would also make for a great activity during your fall book club meetings.
Fall means football. I grew up in a household where NFL Sunday was sacred, and watching the game with friends and loved ones is one of my favorite parts of the season. Whether you’re locked in on the game or you’re just there to get a peek at Taylor Swift in the stands, a football watch party is so fun to host. Game day food is simple—think chips and dip, chicken wings, and other finger foods. An air fryer comes in clutch for football party appetizers! Throw on your favorite team’s colors and keep this event casual with plenty of snacks and drinks on hand.
Pumpkins and petals
Pumpkin painting is a classic fall activity, but if your group of friends isn’t the most artistically-talented, or you just want an easy craft idea, pumpkin glossing is just the thing to try. You’ll still need paint brushes, but instead of colors, get some Mod Podge and dried flowers to stick onto the pumpkin. White pumpkins will make your chosen accents pop—scoop some real ones up at Trader Joe’s or use artificial pumpkins that you can whip out every year. Everyone will feel accomplished bringing home their creation that serves as cute decor for the remainder of the season.
Murder mystery party
How to throw a Murder Mystery Party: 1. Create the guest list and send out the invites at least a month in advance. I use @Evite always for their beautiful designs and their RSVP tracking. #ad It’s sooo helpful for both the host and the guests to have all of the information in one place! 2. Once you have the finalized guest list a week later, purchase your choice of Murder Mystery Party kit based off of the number of guests you have and the theme you want. 3. Assign guests a character at least two weeks in advance so that they have enough time to plan their costumes. 4. Order/gather all necessary decor and plan out a menu. 5. Organize all party supplies (you’ll likely have lots of printouts, folders, a timeline, rules, etc.). 6. The week of, decorate your space and prepare all of the menu items. 7. The day of, become an investigator and enjoy your party!!! #halloween #hosting #fallhosting #murdermysteryparty #partytheme #halloweenparty

Instead of a traditional Halloween costume party, try something new—and dangerously fun—this year: a murder mystery party. Here’s how it works: First, solidify the guest list so you can order a murder mystery kit based on the number of people and theme you prefer. Think: 1920s prohibition, wild west saloon, or a masquerade ball. Next, assign every guest a character two weeks in advance so they have time to plan their costume.
Day of, decorate your space and make snacks to fit the theme. When the guests arrive, take a polaroid photo of everyone to pin to the suspect board so you have easy access while the murders commence. Finally, play private detective when the clock strikes midnight.
TJs and PJs
Trader Joe’s is a year-round staple in my household—and many of yours—but fall is the perfect time to plan a party around the GOAT of grocery stores. Use this as an excuse (not like you need one) to buy all the new Trader Joe’s fall items for the ultimate food spread: Think butternut squash mac and cheese and apple cider.
For a fun activity other than indulging in all the goodies, buy a variety of fall flowers like dahlias and sunflowers for guests to make their own bouquet that they’ll bring home as a party favor. Decorations are simple: Save the brown bags from your latest shop and add some picnic vibes with gingham ribbons and napkins. Finally, tell everyone to wear their favorite pajamas for a cozy, relaxed vibe.
Practical Magic movie night
After nearly 30 years, we’re finally getting more of the Owens sisters (aka Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock) with Practical Magic 2. Celebrate the new release by making themed snacks and rewatching the original film with your witchiest besties. First, create an ultra-cozy, cauldron-like atmosphere with flickering candles and fuzzy black blankets. Slip into your softest pajamas and whip up a batch of Midnight Margaritas and witchy cookies (shoutout black food dye!) Plus, popcorn is never a bad idea when a classic flick is queued up.
Sprinkle embroidery
Needlepoint has been all the rage recently, but if traditional embroidery intimidates you, this edible version is a simpler stepping stone into the hobby. Plus, it doubles as a beautiful (and delicious) dessert! Gather mini sheet cakes so everyone has their own blank frosting canvas. Trader Joe’s has pumpkin spice, vanilla bean, carrot, and chocolate flavors, but you could also bake your own favorite recipe.
Next, stock up on a variety of sprinkles and make sure you have enough craft tweezers for each guest. Now, it’s time to tap into your creativity and create fun designs. Decorate the cakes with all things autumnal, like pumpkins, leaves, cats, and ghosts. The finished product might just be too impressive to eat.
Friendsgiving
It’s never too early to start planning your Friendsgiving. Get a date on the calendar now when you can celebrate the season with your closest friends—the ones who feel like family. Friendsgiving can be a little more casual than Thanksgiving, so you don’t need to go overboard with decor and fancy table settings. This gathering really shines as a potluck, so invite everyone to bring a dish to share. To avoid duplicate dishes, create a sign-up sheet with different sides and desserts—like mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pies—that guests can claim ahead of time. While the host usually takes care of the turkey, you can also go non-traditional with a roast chicken, ham, or a vegetarian option like lasagna. And don’t forget to encourage your guests to bring their own containers for leftovers!
Harvest dinner party
If you’re a fall girlie and simply love the season, a harvest-themed dinner party is the perfect gathering to host. Make it quintessential fall—think pumpkins down the table, a brown and orange color scheme, and a gingham tablecloth. The menu, of course, should be full of seasonal autumnal dishes. Apples, squash, pumpkin, figs, and pears are all in season and hit their peak in September and October. Doesn’t butternut squash soup, pear salad, a roast chicken, and an apple crumble sound heavenly?
Paint and sip night
If you’re craving some time away from your phone, plan a girls’ night that revolves around crafting instead. While you could head to a local art studio for a paint-and-sip night, it’s also easy enough to recreate the same experience at home. Grab a few bottles of wine, set out some art supplies, and start creating your own masterpieces while gabbing and snacking on charcuterie. You could all attempt to recreate the same design, choose your own image to paint, or make it easy with paint-by-number kits. For an autumnal twist, paint pumpkins instead of canvases! I personally find painting so relaxing—it slows my brain down and helps me focus. Doing it while chatting with friends is even better!
Chili cook-off
It’s time to dust off your crockpot because it’s finally chili season! If you and your friends have a competitive edge, a chili cook-off would be such a fun way to spend a fall evening or afternoon. Have everyone make their own signature chili recipe, take turns trying each one, then vote on your favorite. You can even have a fun prize for the winner! Set out small bowls for tasting, and serve plenty of toppings and sides like cornbread, tortilla chips, or even cinnamon rolls (a Midwestern classic).
Candlelit backyard dinner
Dining al fresco is usually reserved for the summer months, but there is a small window during the fall season where the weather is perfectly temperate in the evening. It’s wonderful for eating dinner outdoors without being too hot or too chilly. The sun starts setting earlier as well, making 7 p.m. the ideal time for a sunset dinner. Set the table outdoors, and bring a basket of blankets out with you so your guests can grab one if it gets too cold once the sun goes down. Even if you don’t have a backyard or outdoor space, an at-home outdoor happy hour would be just as lovely on a balcony or front porch. Make your space work for you! String lights and candles are highly encouraged for ultimate cozy vibes.
