Carson DuRallOMAHA, Neb. —

Fresh food, locally made goods, and more, all under one roof, are coming to Omaha. Monday night, Heritage gave us a first look at what the new Public Market in downtown Omaha will look like.

Construction is already underway; the three story 50,00 square foot public market is set to be complete by summer 2028. It’s located in the heart of downtown, overlooking the riverfront’s Heartland of America Park.

“This site will be a vibrant destination and gathering place, a market full of people shopping from local vendors who are selling a variety of fresh, prepared and specialty foods, as well as provisions and local goods,” said Heritage Omaha President Tina Cherica.

The nonprofit said they have spent years exploring the possibility of bringing a public market to the city.

“We went to the Milwaukee Public Market and took a lot of great takeaways there,” Roger Weitz, the Chair of the Omaha Market Trust Board, said.

Heritage Omaha also introduced the new public market’s inaugural executive director, Jerrica Marshall.

“I want to take the best ideas from others successful public market, adopt what works well, and build on those ideas and best practices to make our market uniquely Omaha,” Marshall said.

Marshall has managed the Des Moines farmers market and hosted numerous large scale public events.

“I want to call your attention to a couple design details for the 50,000 square foot building. The iconic and welcoming entrance at Eighth and Farnam Streets have plenty of space for pop-up markets, small vendor booths, and gathering areas for market visitors,” Marshall said.

Weitz said the new public market won’t take business away from the downtown farmers market over the summer.

“This is really intended to be a complement. And, we are already working hand in hand with the farmers market about how does this, support the goals of each organization,” Weitz said.

The market is also fully funded by private donations.

Vendors for the market have not been selected yet, but if you’re interested in being a vendor at the new public market, Heritage Omaha said you can sign up to receive updates at the public market’s website.
