Whipping cream is typically made from actual cream from cows. Obviously real cream won’t work if you’re dairy free or vegan. So, if you’ve been wondering how to make vegan whipped cream… wonder no longer as Katrina shows you exactly how to make coconut whipped cream in today’s video.
There are actually a few different ways to make a non-dairy whipped cream. Today, Katrina walks you through a delicious vegan whipped cream made with coconut milk, or to be more accurate… coconut cream.
To make this recipe you’ll need coconut cream which you can find in many stores. You can also make your own coconut cream by chilling cans of full-fat coconut milk and keeping the hardened part that rises to the top of the can (simply drain off the watery part that collects in the bottom of the can).
As Katrina demonstrates, the basic recipe for this coconut whipped cream remains the same. You can certainly leave it plain for a delicately coconut flavored whipped cream. But the magic happens when you use pure, organic, food grade essential oils to add a hint of flavor.
Want orange whipped cream? You’ll simply add a few drops of orange essential oil. Lemon flavored whipped cream is more your style? Simply add a few drops of lemon essential oil. While not demonstrated in the video, a hint of lavender also goes nicely with many chocolate dishes.
Again, we cannot emphasize strongly enough that you need to be using PURE, ORGANIC essential oils made only from a plant that is appropriate to consume such as citrus fruit, peppermint, and lavender. Basil, oregano, and rosemary are other examples of plants that people commonly cook with that also come in essential oil form, but you’ll want to save those for savory recipes — not whipping cream! 🙂

Here’s a general cooking tip. Many recipes call for extracts you can buy at most grocery stores such as peppermint extract or lemon extract. As a general rule of thumb you can use about 1/4 or less the amount of pure oil to substitute for an extract. Essential oils are concentrated and a little goes a long way, so it’s best to start with just a drop or two and add more if needed to intensify the flavor.
