Apple Festival brings taste of fall to Landrum Farmers Market

LANDRUM—Apples took center stage Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Landrum Farmers Market’s Apple Festival, where vendors offered seasonal baked goods, preserves, crafts and other apple-themed products.
The festival, held from 8 a.m. to noon at 221 W. Rutherford St., brought together local growers, bakers and artisans for a celebration of the fall harvest.
Golden Horse Farm featured apple butter made from apples grown in its orchard. Linda List and Lucy Hoyt, who operate Two Sisters, offered homemade apple fritters made from a family recipe originating in New York state. The fritters combine puff pastry and apples.
Brittany Klimstra of TK Farms, a local apple grower in Green Creek, said the farm experienced a good apple season overall, although some varieties produced smaller fruit.
“We avoided the worst of the early frost that we had,” Klimstra said.
Klimstra said Crimson Crisp, one of the farm’s apple varieties, has been “surprisingly resilient” and produces good color despite the area’s heat. She also praised the market’s emphasis on local growers and seasonal products.
“The fact that they promote growers first for this market matters,” Klimstra said.
Other vendors brought a range of apple-inspired foods and merchandise. Debbie Croft offered homemade applesauce made from an old recipe, along with apple spice cakes. Joy Plumley displayed apple-themed items, including pie holders and napkins.
French Broad Bakery featured apple crumbs, apple croissants, apple coffee cake, and an apple-and-caramel specialty.
The festival’s apple theme extended beyond food, with vendors offering crafts, floral arrangements, and household products inspired by the seasonal fruit.
The variety of offerings gave shoppers a chance to sample locally grown apples and purchase handmade goods while supporting area farmers and small businesses.
