There has been so much said, for and against HFCS for many years now. Let me give it to you in a nut shell.

What is high-fructose corn syrup? High-fructose corn syrup or HFCS, is a man made sweetener, that is found in almost every processed food item on your supermarket shelf, from ketchup, to salad dressings, biscuits and carbonated drinks. It has been used in the manufacture of factory produced foods for about 30 years. The huge rise in obesity has been blamed on the use of HFCS in foods.

Strangely enough, it high fructose corn syrup tastes like table sugar(sucrose), is broken down and absorbed in the body in the same way but is being fingered as the only bad guy in causing obesity.

I suspect that the teal culprit is not just HFCS, but the overall increase in different types of sweeteners and carbohydrates being eaten by us. We are eating a lot more processed foods now, than we did, 30 years ago. So to be fair, the blame should be shared with our our inability to control what we eat, when we eat it and how we eat it.

Enough said! Let’s now look at how to make a healthy homemade ketchup recipe. My son Kiran is here to help me and show us that this is an easy recipe that even a 9 year old can put together very easily and quickly.

My preference, is to use coconut sugar as the sweetener, but please go ahead and use white, light brown or dark brown sugar when you make this ketchup.
