Littlefoot Rats each get 15 to 20 g of food per day. This is divided between fresh and dry food. The meals are adjusted as needed for weight gain and weight loss. It is also adjusted for elderly, growing, pregnant and lactating rats.
The rats are given a dry mix early in the morning. This is followed by a lean period in the day. Rat salad is served for dinner. Rat salad consists of fruits, herbs and vegetables. Grains are incorporated into the dry mix. Proteins are added to the rat salad as each individual rat’s diet requires.
The following are ingredients used in Littlefoot’s Rat Salad:
FRUIT
Just 1 fruit per salad as they have a high sugar content
Fruits that are often used include:
Apple
Blueberries
Bananas
But you can use other rat safe fruits too such as strawberries, raspberries, pear, papaya, melon, etc.
VEGETABLES
Peas
Beetroot
Tomatoes – Fresh or dried
Baby corn
Mangetout / Sugar snap peas and Baby Marrow
Carrots
Mushrooms – Fresh or Dried
Bell Peppers
Sprouts
Other healthy vegetables include pumpkin, butternut, cucumber, spinach and kale, broccoli and eggplant.
HERBS
Parsley
Mint
Microgreens
Thyme
Basil
Rocket
You can also include fennel, dandelion leaves and edible flowers.
Mix it up and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. You can also portion it and freeze it.
Dish up and add proteins if necessary.
Proteins such as sardines, tuna, egg and chicken.
Serve in a clean bowl for your rats to enjoy.
Note that rats do take some time to get used to new foods so it might take a few servings before your rat will eat something new, just stick with it and soon your rats will enjoy healthy meals too.
