🥞 Moong Dal Chilla Recipe

🧺 Ingredients

Moong dal (yellow or green, split) – 1 cup
Water – as needed
Turmeric – ¼ tsp
Baking powder or baking soda – a pinch
Salt – to taste
Garam masala – ¼ tsp
Red chilli powder – ½ tsp (adjust to taste)
Onion – 1 small, finely chopped
Tomato – 1 small, finely chopped
Green chilli – 1, finely chopped
Fresh coriander leaves – 2 tbsp, chopped
Oil – for cooking

👩‍🍳 Method

Soak the dal

Wash the moong dal well and soak it in water for 3–4 hours (or overnight for best results).

Make the batter

Drain the soaked dal and grind it with a little water to make a smooth, thick batter (like dosa batter).

Season the batter

Transfer the batter to a bowl. Add turmeric, salt, garam masala, red chilli powder, and a pinch of baking powder or baking soda. Mix well.

Add vegetables

Add chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, and coriander leaves. Mix gently.

Cook the chilla

Heat a non-stick or iron tawa and lightly grease it with oil.

Pour a ladle of batter and spread it gently into a round shape.

Flip and cook

Drizzle a little oil around the edges. Cook on medium flame until golden on one side, then flip and cook the other side.

Serve hot

Serve hot with green chutney, curd, or tomato sauce.

🌟 Tips

Keep the batter thick; very thin batter makes chilla hard to flip.

If you like it crispier, add a little more oil while cooking.
